Room For One More, Dog Poem

Room For One More

I see by his coat he must be a stray
The untidy look gives him away
He's lost his will and is so thin
He hasn't eaten since God knows when
I know as I coax him through the door
There's always room for one more
The other night in the freezing rain
That little female came up again
Matted and soaked, crying in need
Lost and alone with babies to feed
Her pleading eyes I couldn't ignore
There's always room for one more
There's a new face on the block today
Hungry and unclean to our dismay
I stroked her head and her body rippled
When she got up I saw she was crippled
She started to go but fell to the floor
There's always room for one more
There's the poor dog standing in the rain
I've tried to entice him time and again
One ear's lopsided, the other's been torn
Blind in one eye, lost and forlorn
He's coming now, so I'll open the door
There's always room for one more.

Halitosis (Bad Breath) Causes and Treatments

Is My Dog's Breath Supposed To Stink?
 by: Brigitte Synesael

File:Dog's Joy.jpg

Well, I wouldn't expect any dog to have "minty fresh" breath, but it shouldn't smell so bad that you can't be near your canine friend. There could be several reasons for your dogs' bad breath including a broken, decayed or abscessed tooth, mouth tumors, periodontal disease, gingivitis, diabetes, sinus infections, and inflammation of the gums, kidney disease, and gastrointestinal problems. This is not an exhaustive list, but you can clearly see that it's not as simple as "fixing your dogs' bad breath". You'll have to become a bit of a detective. We'll start with some trial and error.

If the bad breath is temporary, then it's quite likely just something your dog has consumed. Pay attention to what your dog eats (and gets in to). Some canned food will result in foul smelling breath. Raw meat can have the same results. A naughty dog that dines on the garbage regularly will also cause bad breath. If any of these are possibilities, then I suggest you find a way to keep you pooch out of the garbage and/or change his/her dog food to see if that makes a difference. If it is just bad breath from something your favourite friend has eaten, you can squeeze a drop or two of lemon into his water.

If you've ruled out anything consumed, it's time to consider a possible health issue. The most common cause of foul breath in your canine is periodontal disease. Just like people, food particles get stuck in between your dogs' teeth. Decomposed food causes bacteria and this combination results in plaque. This is no different than in humans. Plaque appears as a yellowish, brownish film on the dog's teeth. As with humans, untreated plaque will develop gingivitis and will ultimately progress into periodontal disease. All dogs need their teeth brushed. Brushing their teeth is the best way to proactively prevent this health issue and it is also one of the best ways to resolve it while it's in the early stages.

You can purchase toothbrushes especially for dogs, or you can use a soft bristle toothbrush. You may also want to consider a finger brush; a rubber cap with rubber bristles that goes over your finger. Some dogs aren't comfortable with the toothbrush and you may have better luck with the finger brush. If you start brushing your dogs' teeth when he/she is a puppy, there shouldn't be any problems with it as an adult dog. Even if you're starting with an older dog start by letting him/her sniff and lick the toothpaste. Make this a positive experience. Lots of praise and be very gentle. You may not get all the teeth brushed the first time. It's more important for both of you to have fun with it.

As for toothpaste... do not use people toothpaste. It shouldn't be swallowed and dogs don't like the taste. You can buy toothpaste for dogs or make your own.

Mix:

6 tsps. baking soda

2 dashes of salt

4 tsp. glycerine

2 tsps. either beef or chicken broth

You can try 2 tsps. of peppermint extract for the "minty fresh" breath, but no guarantee that you dog will like it. If there is evidence of swelling of the gums or gingivitis, adding a little crushed sage may help with the swelling.

It's important that you provide your pet with chewing opportunities. Dental chews can be purchased and will help to prevent tartar and plaque build-up. Bones, rawhide, dried pig's ears etc. are a great way to avoid plaque build-up. Be careful of the bones you choose; heavy shin and shank bones are best. Do NOT give your dog chicken bones. You can also take your dog into the Vet on a regular basis for a thorough teeth cleaning. It's also possible that there is an abscessed or decayed tooth that may need to be extracted. The only solution to this is a visit to the Vet. In fact, as we have already discussed, there are several health issues that could be the cause of your dogs' bad breath. Each of these would have to be diagnosed and treated by your Vet. During this time you should keep a close eye on your pet for anything out of the ordinary. Watch for symptoms like abnormal drooling, blood or other discharge from the mouth. Is your pet sneezing or is there a discharge coming from his nose? Is he pawing at his mouth? Is he having difficulty eating or not wanting to eat? Do you notice any swelling in his face?

Also check out what's happening at the rear. Is your dog constipated or does he have diarrhea? Is he passing gas? Bad odour from both ends... big trouble! Is he scratching himself? Does he eat grass but not his food? Is he vomiting? Anything you notice should be brought to the attention of his Vet.

The important thing is to remember is that there could very well be a serious health issue involved, and your dog doesn't have any other way to tell you or to ask for your help. If your pets' bad breath is not resolved, take him to his Vet.

Remember to hug your pet today.

Allergies in Dogs

Allergies In Dogs - What Can I Do About Dog Allergies Symptoms?
 by: Aster Brittan

File:Dogs nose.jpg

It is suggested that if you are looking for permanent relief for dog allergies symptoms you need to go see a veterinary dermatologist. Here you can find the cause for sneezing in dogs, general allergies in dogs and most of your dog skin problems.

People medicines such as Benadryl and Claritin will only provide temporary relief of the signs and your dog will still be uncomfortable.

In some cases the dermatologist may be able to make up allergy shots if they find out the cause of your dogs allergies. You should not make any diet changes or treat your pet with any medication without strict guidance from a veterinarian.

Changing the dog's diet without the guidance from a veterinarian can make it more difficult for them to isolate the cause of the allergies. It’s entirely possible that the causes may involve specific foods. This requires an extensive food trial. However it could be environmental agents that are causing your dog allergies symptoms which would require further allergy testing.

On your own you could try hydroxizine or atarax for some relief. Do Not use prednisone, it is not the greatest it's a steroid and have several side effects. You can also try eliminating the normal protein source with another protein like fish or venison. It takes up to 2 to 3 months of a diet change to tell if there is any effect.

Allergic contact dermatitis usually shows up in dogs as a hypersensitivity reaction to particular molecules in your pet's environment. Irritant contact dermatitis happens when the skin is exposed to noxious substances in the environment. The symptoms and biologic mechanisms in these two disease structures are closely similar and are often discussed together.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a rare disease, which occurs when an animal's skin overreacts to certain small molecules in the environment. Substances, which can cause allergic contact dermatitis in dogs include some antibiotics applied to the skin, metals such as nickel, materials like rubber or wool and chemicals such as dyes and carpet deodorizers.

Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the dog’s skin is exposed to intensely irritating chemicals like the sap in poison ivy or road salt.

What are the symptoms of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis?

Lesions occur on the areas of skin that are sparsely haired and exposed to the offending cause. Areas like the back of the paws, abdomen, muzzle, and lips.

The affected areas are usually very red, have small bumps or blister-like lesions, and itch like crazy. Also in irritant contact dermatitis may occur.

The key to managing these dog allergies symptoms is the obvious removing or restricting of exposure to any allergen or contact irritant in the pet's environment. If your not able to do this, then using fatty acids, antihistamines, biotin, and topical shampoos can at least control the itching.

As a rule, for any pet suspected of having an allergy problem that could include an allergic contact component, we recommend:

Glass or stainless steel food and water bowls, cleaned and rinsed well daily

Hypoallergenic detergents for the pet's bedding

Routine hypoallergenic shampoos for the pet to remove any allergens

Restricting walking to sidewalks or paved surfaces-completely avoiding the grass,

if possible.

Be kind to your pooch!

Hopefully in the not to distant future there will be an easier fix for all allergies in dogs.

Pics of Duke, the White German Shepherd Pup

Duke, The New White German Shepherd (American White Shepherd Pup)

Well, we welcomed Duke into our home about a month ago. He is now three months old and is settling in well to our home. My Pekinese, Sandy, was sooo very angry for the first couple of weeks, seeing Duke as an intruder in her home. They have since made up and he enjoys very much playing a game of pull the Peke's tail! I am somewhat concerned when the dynamics of their relationship changes, being that Sandy is full fledged Alpha and has always deemed  herself so. Will keep you updated.

The traits of American White Shepherds (White German Shepherd) are very obvious in Duke. He is highly intelligent, affectionate, loyal, and family oriented. German Shepherds are by nature a pack dog, they do not like to be in solitude. A few minutes by himself will send him into a fit of cries and moans.

Some info about the American White Shepherd (White German Shepherd)

  • Training Your German Shepherd Dog (Training Your Dog Series)The breed has a distinct personality marked by direct and fearless, but not hostile, expression. The ideal dog is self-confident and maintains a certain aloofness.
  • It is eager and alert when needed, willing to serve in its capacity as a companion, guard, guide dog, herding dog, or whatever the circumstances may demand.
  • The dog must be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence and willingness to meet overtures without itself making them. Lack of confidence under any surroundings is not typical of good character. Any dog that exhibits unprovoked aggression and attempts to bite any person, dog or other animal must be disqualified and removed from any dog show event.
  • White German Shepherds are very loyal, very protective dogs. They are especially protective of those designated as 'pups'. These dogs enjoy running, playing fetch, or any activity with their 'family' or 'pack'. They are loving, and very good with children. These canines are very good companions if raised in a good home. They can learn various tricks (depending on the dog) and are usually intelligent animals. They can also live a very long time - 12–14 years.
  • The White German Shepherd breed have a very playful and curious personality. Some have a tendency to be very vocal by whining, grunting, and moaning. These dogs are respectful to their masters.

Welcoming a New Puppy

We will soon be welcoming a new addition to our family, an American White Shepherd! Our 4 year old Pekingese is certain to fear some competition for the new puppy, but she makes friends fairly easily with other dogs after a time. My kids will hold the honors of naming the new puppy, they are toying with Duke, a fitting name for a White German Shepherd!  I will keep you updated on the events, a new puppy,

How Old Is Your Dog In Human Years?

File:Lhasa-apso-rolly.jpg

Dog Years Human Years

Author: Dog Care Tips

The life expectancy of any dog is commonly expressed in terms of dog years by us and it depends entirely on the dog's breed, size as well as the dog's surroundings. Various other factors affect the life expectancy of a dog. A dog's life span changes according to the diet provided to him and also by the number of medical problems the dog tends to face over the years.

The average life span of the small dog like Chihuahua is about 15 to 16 years, while medium sized the dogs like Border Collies have a life span of 10 to 13 years. It can be noticed big dogs like Great Dean live up to only 7 to 8 years. The calculation of the life expectancy of particular dog can be accurately done with the help of "size or the specific breed calculator", which is said to be one of the most accurate age measurement schemes available. The size or specific breed calculator gives approximate results about the dog's predictable lifespan based on the size as well as the breed of the dog.

It is generally assumed that, on an average, "one human year equals to seven dog years". This statement may not be appropriate, since the first two years are jointly represented by 18-25 years in such schemes and because the entire ratio cannot be generalized for all the dogs though, they belong to different sizes and breeds. An exact ratio of dog years vs. human year cannot be formulated. However, some obvious features remain similar between both aging humans and dogs.

It is generally assumed that the human equivalent of a one-year dog is supposedly fully grown by both mental and physical aspects. Dogs like humans tend to develop advance muscular features as they grow along with a similar mental development. Through a major dog study, it has been estimated for dogs of all breeds and sizes that, nearly "64 percent of dogs" were euthanized because they were affected with some kind of diseases. Only 8 percent of the total dogs live beyond 15 years and nearly 16 percent of them die yearly due heart diseases and cancer. Human lives are not terminated even if they suffer from rare and incurable diseases; and this is the main reason why the lifespan of an average human being is reasonably long.

The effects of aging in dogs is said to be dormant for several years. But like humans, dogs to undergo physical changes as well. The first sign of aging in dogs is said to be the decrease in its activity levels. The sleeping period in these dogs also becomes longer. The canines experience a drastic change in their skin condition, limb usage, appetite and they experience tooth loss as well. Their sense of hearing and vision also diminishes gradually. Older dogs tend to experience stiffness in their body. All these obvious signs of aging can even be found in humans. The human years are extended only because of advance modern medicine and various other drugs that are designed to deal with symptoms of old age.

Dogs and humans may not have the same physiology, yet some obvious similarities can be noticed when both species age. Dog years and Human years may not be directly related by some advance equation, but to the naked eye the equivalence of corresponding features of Dog years and Human years are quite visible.

The Causes of Bad Breath (Halitosis) in Dogs

File:Chihuahuabland.jpg

If your dog has bad breath (halitosis) it is reason for concern. Not only is the odor unappealing, but it may also be a sign of an underlying problem. There are a variety of conditions that cause bad breath in dogs that warrant investigation. The solution may be simply providing effective dental care or perhaps, more seriously, an underlying gastrointestinal problem.
What Causes Bad Breath?
In most cases bad breath (halitosis) in dogs is caused by  gum or dental disease. Small dogs are especially prone to dental problems such as tarter and plaque buildup warranting special attention to these areas.  If after proper dental attention the problem does not resolve, further investigation is needed. Bad breath results from the accumulation of bacteria most often in the mouth, but may also occur in the lungs, liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract. A serious underlying problem may be present which requires prompt medical investigation and treatment. If your dog’s bad breath is persistent he or she should be taking to a veterinarian for examination and testing.
Treatments for Bad Breath in Dogs
Oral Care
Daily oral care is needed to prevent plaque and tarter buildup. There are many great, natural products on the market, such as Leba III Dog Dental Spray and Triple Pet All Natural Toothpaste(Only use toothpaste formulated for dogs as human formulas may upset  his stomach) that provide for optimal, natural oral care. There are also brushless, chewable toothpaste's available such as Ark Naturals Breath-Less Brushless Toothpaste S/M. Your dog may require a specialized cleaning by a professional if all methods still result in continuing tarter and plaque buildup.
Change of Food
If your dog’s diet is contributing to halitosis, change his diet to easily digestible food that is of high-quality
Chew Toys
Make available chew toys, such as Terrabone Dog Treat Fresh Breath Regular Value Pack, that naturally clean tarter and plaque from your dog’s teeth.
Signs of Concern
Observe your dog’s drinking habits. If he has been drinking more than usual and urinating frequently, accompanied by fruity, sweet smelling breath, this may be a sign of diabetes.
An indication of kidney disease is breath that smells of urine
Foul breath accompanied by yellowed whites of the eye, vomiting, decreased appetite could indicate a problem with the liver.

Understanding Puggles

File:Puggle Puppy - Molly.jpg

By Aliceshown

There have been many new hybrids of dogs created recently, and one of the most interesting new hybrids available now are puggles. Online puggle breeders use a male pug and a female beagle to create this amazing new breed, and many people are interested to see what this new type of dog is all about. Fans of pugs and beagles are particularly interested in this new breed because they want to see which features were taken from each breed of dog. The truth is, puggle puppies usually take different characteristics from their parents. There is no set amount of pug or beagle that will be in each puggle, so every puggle can look rather different from any other one. This means the online puggles for sale come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. You will definitely have a lot of dogs to choose from if you start contacting an online puggle puppies breeder. These dogs simply look great and they are very easy to keep track of because of their amazing ability to stay relaxed as much as possible.

Pugs are very small, strong, and happy dogs, and they are often looked at in an affectionate and loving way. Puggles take these qualities and combine them with the curiosity and sociability of a beagle. Pugs are often more laid back than beagles, which makes this combination even more interesting. When you put these two dogs together, you get an amazing breed of dog that is always a joy to be around. They want to play when you get them a new toy, but puggles are fine just laying around on a rainy day too. Puggles usually get the cute pug tail from their father too, which is just a small part of what makes them so adorable.

The simple fact is that puggles are very pleasant pets to have around the house. Puggle puppies will enjoy playing with everyone, including people and other breeds of dogs, and they very playful at all times. They can keep up with you all day, but they are certainly hard to get up after a long day of playing with other people and dogs in the neighborhood. Puggles are rather low maintenance, so you don't need to worry about them all the time. They have a go with the flow attitude, so they'll be always be happy, no matter what the circumstances of their situation happens to be. Training a puggle can be rather tricky because all the want to do is play around, but they can be trained with enough effort just like any other breed of dog. As long as you are able to keep your puggle active, you shouldn't run into any health problems and they are actually considered to be more healthy overall than pugs.

The Best Toys For Dogs

By Amber Contant

Few things are as enjoyable as playing with your dog or watching him play. Buying your dog toys helps stimulate him both physically and mentally. Toys can help prevent your dog from becoming bored and developing behavioral problems caused by boredom and loneliness. Some toys help your dog develop mentally while others keep him entertained physically. Here are a few examples of the different types of toys you can find for your dog.

Interactive Toys

Interactive toys are toys you can use to play with your dog. These include tug of war toys such as rope as well as balls and retrieving rolls. These toys do not need to be expensive but they should be designed appropriately so as not to harm your dog. Hunting and retrieving breeds of dogs love a good game of chase or fetch and balls and sticks can provide hours of endless fun for these dogs.
Frisbees specially designed for dogs are available that allow your dog to catch them comfortably without hurting their mouths.

House and Yard Toys

House and yard toys include toys that your dog can occupy himself with while you're busy or out of the house. Most dogs love squeaky toys and will spend hours playing with them. Some dogs will play with their toys gently and some dogs will not rest until they have gutted the toy to get at the source of the squeaking. If your dog is the type that rips toys apart, then you should supervise him when he has access to a toy in case he accidently swallows the plastic squeaker.

Stuffed toys are also popular with many dogs and your dog will enjoy "killing" his stuffed toy by shaking it violently. Avoid badly manufactured toys or toys that contain harmful stuffing as these could serious harm your dog. Dogs can easily swallow things they shouldn't ingest and this can cause them serious problems. If your dog swallows the stuffing of a toy, he can develop an intestinal blockage that may require costly surgery. If you give your dog toys that haven't been specially made for dogs, make sure you remove any buttons, eyes, whiskers and any detachable pieces before giving them to your dog to reduce the risk of choking.
Educational toys such as buster cubes keep your dog mentally stimulated for hours on end as he rolls the cube or ball around trying to get it to dispense treats.

Floatable toys are great for playing with your dog on hot summer days. Many dogs enjoy swimming and playing in water and these dogs will enhance their fun. Floatable toys such as balls and rings can be used in retrieving games or for your dog to play with by himself.

Dogs love to play, and toys give them the opportunity to do so. Dogs recognize their toys as belonging to them and when you buy your dog a toy he will understand this is something fun for him and it will make him joyful. Dogs give us so much joy so sometimes it's only appropriate to try and give some joy back to them too!

Animal Planet's Confessions: Animal Hoarding, Janice Lets Go

If you watch Confessions: Animal Hoarding on Animal Planet, you may have seen the episode featuring Janice, the woman who was living with 112 dogs in her small trailer. The conditions were unbelievable, dogs crammed into every space running along the feces lined floors or in stacked crates along the walls. Thankfully, Janice let them all go to a shelter for adoption, realizing she could not properly take care of all of her dogs, and it was in fact destroying her life as well.

Fairbanks Alaska, 156 Neglected and Starving Dogs Rescued

January 13, 2011

One Hundred and Fifty-Six dogs were rescued from a Montana Creek Breeder in the Susitna Valley suffering from neglect and starvation. All of the 156 dogs have been evaluated by a veterinarian and receiving medical care. Their food intake and daily weight are being monitored as these dogs are severely malnourished and fragile.

The Mat-Su shelter has a capacity for 66 kennels and was nearly at capacity when the abused dogs arrived, so it is obviously seeking resources for caring for these dogs. In efforts to lower the dog count, it is lowering the price of adopting the previous dogs in hopes that will clear room and supplies for the new occupants.

The main concern for the shelter is the possible long-term care that will be required while the criminal case is conducted and concluded. The animals are evidence and must be held during this time. The owner, Frank J. Rich has pleased not guilty to fifty counts of animal cruelty.

The shelter is accepting donations and are asking for items such as blankets, towels, latex gloves, metal dog bowls, and medium and large dog crates. People have been donating money and food as well to aid in the support of the dogs.

Daily Updates on the rescued dogs may be found at www.matsugov.us/animalcare/news

Credit card monetary donation will be taken over the phone at the Mat-Su Animal Shelter-1-907-746-5500

Check donations may be mailed to, Animal Care & Regulation- Attn: Richard Stockdale, 350 E. Dahlia Ave, Palmer Alaska 99645

Donated items such as metal dog bowls, towels, food, etc may be dropped off at the Fairbanks Daily NewsMiner, 200 N. Crushman St.

Dog Health - How to Keep Your Dog Safe

File:Cavapoo (Female).jpg

By Douglas Hanna

Preventable accidents are sadly also a leading cause of early death for many dogs. Dogs, which suffer from car accidents, injuries from, dogfights, and accidental poisonings are unfortunately seen regularly in veterinarian clinics everywhere. While accidents sometimes happen no matter how many precautions we take, there are things that you can do to help keep your dog as safe as possible.

Protect Your Dog From Vehicular Accidents And Dog Fights

Never let your dog outside unaccompanied, and try to keep your dog in a fenced in yard. Keep the possibilities of accidental dogfights down by introducing your dog slowly to other dogs, or better yet keep other dogs away from your dog all together. Most dogfights occur when dogs are outside by themselves; be sure that your dog cannot run out of the house or escape from the yard.
If your dog is in an area where there are any vehicles, even golf carts or mopeds, watch your dog closely and always keep your dog on a secure leash and harness.

Dangerous dogfights can also occur when dogs are in a household that has a lot of other dogs. If you own more than one dog, and they continue to fight, then you may need to permanently separate the dogs to keep them from hurting one another.

Train Your Dog To Respond To Your Commands

A big part of keeping your dog safe involves training, which will help your dog to respond to
your voice in any type of situation. Professional training classes are often needed to obtain the desired and effective results, and the lessons you and your dog learn in these classes will need to be continually practiced throughout the dog's lifetime.

If one day your dog does run outside without a leash, you can quickly call your dog back to you before he or she gets into an accident; if your dog confronts another dog you may be able to call your dog away before a fight occurs. Training your dog can save your dog's life, and working with your dog will also help you and your dog to develop a stronger bond.

Protect Your Dog From Accidental Poisoning

Every year dogs around the world experience fatal poisoning accidents. Many of these accidents are caused by rodent poisons that are placed around the home or in outside areas where a dog has access to them. A dog may be treated successfully from rodenticide poisonings, but ingesting these products can often lead to permanent organ damage. If you use any poisonous products around your home, make sure that your dog will not be able to reach them at all.

Poisoning accidents can also occur from products around the home that are deadly, but they do not have a bad taste or smell and so your dog may ingest it out of curiosity, thirst, or hunger.
Anti-freeze is an example of a dangerous household product that can fatally poison dogs; while anti-freeze is a hazardous chemical, it actually has a slightly sweet taste; try to be aware of any products in an around the home that may harm your dog.

Other more common accidental poisonings occur when dogs eat prescription medications and over the counter drugs. These drugs may taste horrible to us, but for some reason dogs seem to find pills particularly appetizing. You may not think that your dog is tempted to eat your bottle of xanax, but it does happen.
In fact, recently some pet owners have discovered that their dogs are obsessed with getting into anti-depressant medications. While some of these stories are amusing, the health consequences that dogs can suffer from these types of overdoses are serious. Always keep over the counter drugs and prescription medications far out of reach of your dog.

Microchip Your Dog

Chipping your dog is one of the most proactive steps you can take towards keeping your dog safe, healthy, and in your care for as long as possible. If at some time you and your dog become separated, than a microchip may help to reunite you with your dog. When your dog becomes lost there is always the possibility that another person may adopt your dog, but a lost dog can also suffer from starvation, fights with other animals, or an accident with a vehicle.

When you can't claim your dog

Dogs that are lost are frequently picked up and brought to humane animal shelters as well, but if the dog is not claimed or adopted within a specified amount of time the dog will be euthanized.
If your dog does become lost and ends up in an animal shelter, a microchip will quickly identify your dog removing any chance that your dog may be accidentally euthanized.

A microchip will also help to identify your dog if you and your dog are separated in an
emergency. Mandatory evacuations caused by fires, floods, and storms are notorious for
separating dogs and their frantic owners; while you may experience a temporary separation from your dog in the event of an emergency, a microchip can bring you and your dog back together.

Remember Your Dog When Choosing a Dog Bed

File:Bullterrier und AmericanStaffordshireterrier.jpg

By Samantha Clark

Most dog owners can't bear the thought of their dog sleeping on the cold ground in the night. So to overcome this problem, there are different kinds of dog beds found in the market. It is up to you to choose the best dog bed that fits the size, and other needs of the dog.
There are different kinds of dog beds in the market today. You find small dog beds, large beds and hard dog beds. There are also unique dog beds with different shapes and designs like perhaps the shape of your bed or a dog bed that resembles toy cars and sofas. There is also the unique dog bed that uses an ultra modern metal frame that floats other types of dog beds and heated dog beds that keep the dog warm and comfy for those winter seasons.
When choosing the dog bed, you have to take the size of the dog into consideration. Large dogs obviously need large dog beds. However, if you have a dog that tends to chew fabric and your cushions, then it is better to have a designer dog bed done to handle this chewing problem. It is always better to note where your dog prefers to sleep, to help you decide on the right dog bed for your dog.
Dogs preferring to sleep on the floor need hard dog beds while those preferring to sleep on the sofa need a soft dog bed. You can also decide on the right shape for the dog bed by noting how the dog prefers to sleep. Dogs that like curling up should choose get a curved dog bed while those dogs that prefer spreading out on the sofa deserve a sofa and rectangular dog bed.
Whichever dog bed you decide for your dog, it is important that you choose a dog bed that confirms latest health and safety standards. Also make sure that you choose a dog bed that is fully washable or at least has a removable washable cover. This is so that you can wash the dog bed periodically to keep it clean and healthy for the dog to use.

Time-Tested Tips On Behavior Dog Training For Beginners

By Stephen Best

Having a well behaved, well mannered dog is a great joy and pleasure. While some dogs seem to "naturally" behave themselves and have a good disposition. Others need help. They need behavior dog training.
Here are four time-tested tips for behavior dog training. I remember them with the acronym "FARR".

1. Flexible

As mentioned below, while you must assume the role of the "alpha" dog in all cases, you must understand that each dog has it's own personality and the each dog breed has it's own characteristics. A specific method that works with one dog may not work with another dog. Also, whatever is causing one dog to misbehave may not be the same cause for another dog to misbehave. For example, one dog may suffer separation anxiety, become depressed and frustrated and chew things. Another dog may be jealous of a newborn baby or another dog and chew things to gain attention. You must be flexible and willing to try different methods of behavior dog training to gain the behavior that you want.

2. "Alpha" Dog

Dogs are social animals. They have a pack instinct. They look to the "alpha" dog for leadership. Have you ever noticed that when two or more dogs are together, one is the leader. When the other dog(s) start to do something that the "alpha" dog doesn't like, the "alpha" dog will growl and show his/her disapproval. The "alpha" dog might even attack the misbehaving dog. For effective dog training in general and behavior dog training in particular, you must be the leader. You must assume the role of the "alpha" dog. You cannot let your dog do whatever he/she wants to do. This is not to suggest that you attack or beat your dog, but you need to show disapproval for misbehaving. For example, say "NO" in a very stern voice.

3. Reward

Rewarding your dog will give you better and more effective results than punishing your dog. Notice that the stern "NO" mentioned above is not punishment. Punishment is hitting or beating a dog and is not acceptable. The stern "NO" is to let your dog know that you disapprove of his/her behavior. Dogs generally want to please their owners. So when your dog does something right, petting your dog, saying "Good Boy" or "Good Girl", and giving your dog a treat will make your dog feel good and encourage more of the same good behavior.

4. Repetition

Use repetition and be consistent in your behavior dog training. Dogs learn by repetition - doing the same thing over and over. When your dog does something good that you want it to do, reward your dog. Be consistent. If you reward your dog one time, but not the next, your dog may become confused. Your dog may not understand what you want him/her to do. After all, you rewarded him/her one time, but ignored the same good behavior another time. Was it good behavior the first time? Your dog may not know.
There you have it. For dog training in general and behavior dog training in particular, remember "FARR": Be Flexible, Assume the role of the "Alpha" dog, Use Rewards, and Use Repetition.
